Two straight north-south paths order the grounds and are linked by curving paths, with the funeral halls set on a natural hill and a large U-shaped meadow between the entrance and the buildings. The cemetery contains an Italian war cemetery created in 1953 for 1,183 prisoners of war, many unidentified, with grave markers laid out in a regular pattern and set apart from the rest by trees and shrubs. Among those buried here are numerous notable figures from Berlin, including post-war mayors and figures such as Willy Brandt and the dancer Tatjana Gsovsky, some with honorary graves maintained by the Berlin Senate.
