Jagdschloss Grunewald
Jagdschloss Grunewald is the oldest surviving palace building in Berlin, built from 1542 onwards by Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg as a hunting lodge in Renaissance style. Located on the shores of the Grunewaldsee, in the middle of the forest, it holds Berlin's largest Cranach collection, with almost 30 works by Lucas Cranach the Elder, the Younger and their workshop, including nine central panels from a Passion cycle of 1537/38 and four panels depicting the sovereign virtues. The collection is rounded out by German and Dutch painting from the 15th and 16th centuries, a portrait gallery of Brandenburg-Prussian rulers, and objects related to hunting. Visits are guided in German, with information available in other languages. The palace also hosts concerts and cultural events, and has a café and a holiday house on the grounds.
