Hiraoka Shrine
In the western foothills of the Ikoma Mountains, in Higashiōsaka, stands this Shinto shrine, whose origins probably go back to the Kofun period. Once a centre of worship of Mount Kozudake, it was the ichinomiya of Kawachi Province and is mentioned in official chronicles of the Heian period. Two of its four deities were transferred to Kasuga Taisha in Nara, hence its nickname Moto-Kasuga. The present complex, rebuilt in 1826 by local worshippers, preserves four Kasuga-zukuri style shrines under a single structure, recognised as a Tangible Cultural Property of the city. Its main festival is held every 1 February.
