An eleven-arch stone bridge over the Yongding River, built in the late 12th century in the Jin era and known in China as the Lugou Bridge. Marco Polo described it in his account, hence its Western name. Its balustrades are topped by hundreds of stone lions. Here the Marco Polo Bridge Incident began on 7 July 1937, the start of the Sino-Japanese War. It is southwest of Beijing.
