Arch of Fernán González

CultureVisit: ~15 min

The Arch of Fernán González is a triumphal arch built between 1584 and 1587 on Calle Fernán González, on the site where the Castilian count's houses once stood, to perpetuate his memory. The work is attributed to the master stonemason Juan Ortega de Castañeda and is in the Herrerian style. It has two storeys: the lower one opens into a large semicircular bay flanked by Tuscan columns, and the upper one has another opening topped by a straight pediment. At the top are displayed the royal coats of arms and those of Burgos and Castile, and a cartouche carries a text by fray Luis de León recalling the count. It stands in the historic centre, a few steps from the cathedral, and can be seen from the street, with no ticket or opening hours.
