Church of San Nicolás de Bari

CultureVisit: ~30 minFrom €4Opening hours: Todos los días de 11:30 a 19:00.

A Gothic church from the early 15th century, next to the cathedral, on Calle Fernán González. Its façade is plain and contrasts with an interior packed with ornament. The most notable feature is the stone high altarpiece of 1505, attributed to the workshop of the Colonia family (Simon and his son Francis), which covers the whole east end with dozens of carved figures; the high choir at the west end, with its segmental arch and carved vault, is considered to be from the same workshop. There are also Gothic tombs and a Renaissance arch over the burial place of Fernando de Mena and María Sáez de Oña. The church already appears among the parishes of Burgos in 1163, although the present building dates from the 15th century. It is part of the Merchants' Route, which links this church with San Gil and San Esteban.
