Also known as Sungnyemun, it is the south gate of Seoul's old city wall, built in 1398. It was declared National Treasure No. 1 of South Korea. An arson fire in 2008 destroyed a good part of the tower, which was restored and reopened in 2013. It stands in the middle of a large avenue, next to Namdaemun Market.
