Zen temple of the Rinzai school founded in 1339 by Ashikaga Takauji in Arashiyama, west of Kyoto. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its pond garden, attributed to the monk Musō Soseki, is one of the oldest in Japan to retain its original layout, with Mount Arashiyama as borrowed scenery. One exit from the garden leads directly to the Sagano bamboo grove.
