The central square of modern European Istanbul, in Beyoğlu, and the starting point of İstiklal Avenue. At its centre stands the Republic Monument, the work of Pietro Canonica, inaugurated in 1928. It is a transport hub, with the metro and the funicular to Kabataş, and a regular setting for celebrations and demonstrations. Next to it are the Atatürk Cultural Centre and the Taksim Mosque, opened in 2021.
