Monument to Isabella the Catholic and Christopher Columbus
This is a bronze group on a stone pedestal by Mariano Benlliure, informally unveiled on 2 November 1892, on the fourth centenary of the capture of Granada. Benlliure received the commission after a public competition was declared void. Isabella I is shown seated on her throne and Columbus pauses on the stairs that form the upper part of the pedestal to bow before her, in the scene of the agreement that authorised his voyage, the Capitulations of Santa Fe, signed on 17 April 1492. A figure of Boabdil had been planned but was dropped. The group was first on the Paseo del Salón and in 1962 the city council moved it to Plaza de Isabel la Católica, close to the Royal Chapel, where the queen is buried. The square lies between the Gran Vía and Calle Reyes Católicos.
