Church of the Light
The Church of the Light is a small reinforced-concrete chapel built in 1989 in a residential neighbourhood of Ibaraki, Osaka. It is the main chapel of the Ibaraki Kasugaoka Church and one of the most famous works by architect Tadao Ando. The building, about 113 m², is made up of three 5.9-metre concrete cubes pierced by a wall tilted at 15 degrees. Inside, a cross carved into the concrete wall behind the altar lets in light during the day, creating a striking contrast between light and solid mass. The space is marked by a deep emptiness and silence that many visitors describe as either serene or unsettling. The benches and floorboards are made from reused construction scaffolding. The church stands 25 km north-northeast of Osaka, on the western foothills of the Yodo valley.
