Headquarters of the Hongan-ji branch of Jōdo Shinshū Buddhism, west of Kyoto station. Its present grounds are due to the donation of land made in 1591 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It includes the Goeidō, dedicated to the founder Shinran, and the Amidadō, two large wooden halls, and the Karamon gate, with abundant sculptural decoration.
