National Museum of Art, Osaka
The National Museum of Art, Osaka is an underground museum devoted to contemporary art, located on Nakanoshima island. Its collection of around 8,000 works by Japanese and international artists working after 1945 is the largest of its kind in Japan and is shown through themed exhibitions that change several times a year. The building, designed by César Pelli, has most of its facilities underground, with the entrance, auditorium, restaurant and shop at ground level. The collection displays are on the second basement level, while special exhibitions are held on the third basement level. The museum is part of the joint catalogue of Japan's four national art museums.
