Temple in the Sakyō district, next to the Philosopher's Path, which belonged to the Jōdo school until 1953, when it became an independent religious corporation. Its origin is said to lie in a hermitage where Hōnen and his disciples held the adoration of the six daily sessions. In 1680 Manmin, the 38th head of Chion-in, proposed a nembutsu dōjō on the site and rebuilt the temple with his disciple Oshin Keikaku. The hōjō is a former imperial palace moved here in 1687, with sliding-door paintings by Kanō Mitsunobu, an Important Cultural Property. The grounds have a Pure Land-style garden with the Zenkisui spring, a sutra library from 1737, a ten-storey stone pagoda, a white sand platform and a sukiya-style thatched gate. The cemetery is the resting place of the novelist Tanizaki Jun'ichirō, Naitō Konan, Kawakami Hajime and Kuki Shūzō.
