First Cemetery of Athens
CultureVisit: ~60 min
Cemetery opened in 1837, shortly after Athens became the capital of the new Greek state, next to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. It holds 19th- and early 20th-century mausoleums and funerary sculptures. Figures such as Theodoros Kolokotronis and Heinrich Schliemann rest there, the latter's mausoleum being the work of the architect Ernst Ziller. The sculpture of the Sleeping Maiden, by Yannoulis Chalepas, also stands out.
