The Colomares Monument Castle is an architectural complex built between 1987 and 1994 by Dr. Esteban Martín Martín as a tribute to the fifth centenary of the discovery of the Americas and to Hispanic heritage. Visitors walk through a monument conceived as a sculpted book: numbers on the walls of the buildings correspond to the chapters of that narrative, and the façades, inscriptions and legends form part of the story. The construction combines Gothic, Romanesque, Byzantine and Mudéjar elements, and was carved and sculpted entirely on site by its creator, with the help of two master bricklayers and stonemasons from Málaga. The grounds include a church dedicated to St. Elizabeth of Hungary, beneath whose altar the founder's ashes are kept. It is a privately owned, family-run property maintained through visitor contributions.
