Schöner Brunnen (Beautiful Fountain)
The Schöner Brunnen is a Gothic fountain about 19 metres high, built between 1385 and 1396, usually attributed to Heinrich Beheim, in Nuremberg's market square. It has forty painted figures spread over four levels, representing the world view of the Holy Roman Empire. Among them are philosophers, evangelists, Church Fathers, the seven prince-electors, the Nine Worthies, Moses and seven prophets. What you see today is an early 20th-century copy, in limestone painted in colours; remains of the original fountain are kept in the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. It is surrounded by a railing from 1587, the work of Paulus Kühn of Augsburg, with a brass ring that turns on itself and that tradition says should be turned for good luck.
