Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche)
The Frauenkirche stands on the east side of the Hauptmarkt, Nuremberg's main square. It was commissioned by Emperor Charles IV in the mid-14th century as a chapel for the imperial court, on the site of the synagogue of the Jewish quarter, destroyed in the pogrom of 1349. Its best-known feature is the artistic clock on the west gable, whose mechanism dates from 1509. Every day at twelve noon the Männleinlaufen is activated: after the ringing of bells and a prelude of trumpets, drums and flutes, seven electors parade before Emperor Charles IV. The show lasts about four minutes. Inside is preserved the Tucher altar, a painted altarpiece from the mid-15th century. The interior can be visited outside service times.
