Craftsmen's Courtyard (Handwerkerhof)

The Handwerkerhof is a medieval-style complex that opened in 1971, during the Dürer Year, in the former parade ground of the imperial city, sheltered by the historic wall. It stands beside the Königstor, the King's Gate, on the edge of the old town and a few steps from the central station. It brings together small houses with workshops and craft shops: tin toys, ceramics, leatherwork, pewter figures, glass, candles, soaps, lebkuchen and chocolate. Inside there is also a tourist office and several places to eat and drink. It is a convenient way into the centre, since the route from the gate leads on to the walk towards the Frauentorgraben and the main streets. The complex can be explored at a leisurely pace and gives a view of the stretch of wall that encloses it.
