Monserrate Palace (Palácio de Monserrate)
Monserrate is a palace with a botanical garden on the outskirts of Sintra. It was transformed by Francis Cook, a wealthy 19th-century British industrialist and art collector, who turned the estate into a Romantic masterpiece; the architect was James Knowles Jr. and the building combines several influences. Inside are the Main Hall, the Gallery, the Library, the Music Room and the chapel. The park gathers exotic species from around the world, with the Fern Valley, the Japanese Garden, the Mexican Garden, the Rose Garden and Beckford's Waterfall. The present palace was built in 1858 on the ruins of an earlier Gothic Revival house in which the writer William Beckford had lived; Lord Byron mentioned the place in 'Childe Harold's Pilgrimage'.
