This is a Renaissance triumphal arch built in 1585 on the climb to the upper part of the city, next to the Alcazaba and the Royal Collegiate Church of Santa María la Mayor. It replaced a gate in the Muslim city wall and was conceived, in keeping with humanist fashion, as a tribute to Roman Antiquity. It is about seven metres high and is opened through a rubble-stone wall more than two metres thick. On the keystone of the façade there is a relief of a vase of lilies, and on the outer face is the city's coat of arms, with a castle and a lion. The wall incorporates Roman tablets and pieces found in the area, with Latin inscriptions about Antikaria and other nearby cities, as well as four large slabs with a dedication to Philip II. The face towards Plaza de la Feria was once crowned by a statue of Hercules, now almost lost, and the one towards Plaza de los Escribanos preserves the remains of a Nike.
