Church of San Agustín
Church on the Plaza de San Agustín, at the entrance to the historic centre, a remnant of the former Augustinian convent built in the 14th century. It has a single nave with side chapels and diaphragm arches supporting the roof, in a simple Gothic style. It went through Baroque alterations and suffered serious damage in the Civil War, after which it was rebuilt. Around 1940 the architect Javier Goerlich designed the neo-Gothic stone façade, intended to give the building unity and height and to preside over the square, which was opened up when the old Pescadores district disappeared with the opening of Avenida del Oeste. Inside, the chapel of the Cristo de la Fe, the spiritual centre of the church restored after the war, stands out, along with a high altar stripped of later ornamentation to let the Gothic lines and the light show.
