Madison Avenue

Madison Avenue is a north-south, one-way (northbound) street in Manhattan, running from Madison Square Park (23rd Street) to the Madison Avenue Bridge (138th Street). Along its route it passes through Midtown, the Upper East Side (including Carnegie Hill), East Harlem and Harlem. It was laid out in 1836, outside the original 1811 plan, and takes its name from Madison Square, itself named after James Madison. The avenue is known for its historic association with the American advertising industry, which turned it into a byword for the sector from the 1920s onward. It has a notable concentration of buildings designated as city and national landmarks, including the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company Tower, the Appellate Division Courthouse, the New York Life Building, the Morgan Library & Museum, St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Villard Houses, the Fuller Building and the Gertrude Rhinelander Waldo House, among many others. Madison Square Park, a 6.2-acre public park, also lies along its route. The avenue is served by numerous bus routes, including the M1, M2, M3, M4 and several express lines.
