Fifth Avenue

Fifth Avenue is one of Manhattan's main thoroughfares and serves as the dividing line between the east and west sides of the island. Between 34th and 59th Streets it is home to a luxury shopping district, with names such as Tiffany & Co., Cartier, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, Hermès and Saks Fifth Avenue, as well as historic department stores. Further north, between 82nd and 110th Streets, lies Museum Mile, with nine museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, El Museo del Barrio, the Museum of the City of New York, the Jewish Museum, Cooper Hewitt and the Neue Galerie. Along its route stand landmark buildings such as the Empire State Building, the New York Public Library, Rockefeller Center and St Patrick's Cathedral. The avenue is also the traditional route of parades such as Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Puerto Rican Day Parade, and is closed to traffic on several Sundays a year. Its southern stretch, from Washington Square Park, and its extension into Harlem complete a highly diverse urban axis.
