Zen temple officially called Jishō-ji, built in 1482 as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, grandson of the builder of Kinkaku-ji. Despite its name, the pavilion was never actually covered in silver. The grounds include a garden of raked sand with a truncated cone called Kōgetsudai, a moss garden and a path that climbs to a viewpoint over the complex. It is at the start of the Philosopher's Path, in eastern Kyoto.
