Royal Monastery of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas

CultureVisit: ~90 min

A Cistercian monastery founded by Alfonso VIII of Castile and Eleanor Plantagenet at the end of the 12th century; construction is dated between 1181 and 1222. Alfonso VIII intended it as a royal pantheon and many kings and nobles were buried there. It has two cloisters: the Claustrillas, the oldest, Romanesque in origin with Gothic details, and that of San Fernando, Gothic from the early 13th century with Mudéjar plasterwork. In the chapter house a banner is displayed, a trophy taken from the Almohads by Ferdinand III. In the former storeroom of the San Fernando cloister is the Museum of Medieval Textiles, with fabrics from the 13th and 14th centuries, including the clothes from the tomb of Fernando de la Cerda, found intact. Outside the main complex, the Mudéjar Chapel of Santiago holds a 13th-century articulated image of the apostle that was used to dub knights. It is in the Las Huelgas neighbourhood, next to the Arlanzón promenade.
