Burgos Castle
The fortress occupies the top of Castle Hill, about 75 metres above the city. Tradition places its first tower in the year 884, under Count Diego Porcelos. Over time it was a royal residence under Henry IV, a state prison and, in the 16th century, an artillery school. The French blew it up on 13 June 1813 as they retreated, and the explosion damaged nearby churches such as Santa María la Blanca. Today it is partly rebuilt and houses an interpretation centre opened in 2003, as well as an archaeological museum designed by Marian Álvarez-Buylla and Joaquín Ibáñez Montoya. Among its remains stands out the well, known as the Moor's Cave, about 62 metres deep, with galleries over 300 metres long from the 12th and 13th centuries that can be visited on guided tours for small groups. Landscaped areas of the hill surround the site.
