King's Hospital
The Hospital del Rey was founded by Alfonso VIII in 1195 to receive pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago and to care for the sick, under the jurisdiction of the abbess of the monastery of Las Huelgas. Almost nothing remains of that 13th-century Gothic infirmary. What is preserved is the Puerta de Romeros, a 16th-century Plateresque entrance that leads to the courtyard of the same name and to the church, whose doorway shows a scene of pilgrims before St James. Next to the gate are the hermitage of San Amaro and the old cemetery where pilgrims who died were buried. Since the 1990s the building has been a university one: it houses the Rectorate and the Faculty of Law of the University of Burgos. It has been a Bien de Interés Cultural since 1931.
