St. Hedwig's Cathedral, Berlin

St. Hedwig's Cathedral, on Bebelplatz, is the Catholic cathedral of the Archdiocese of Berlin and a listed building. It was built between 1747 and 1773 by order of Frederick II the Great, to plans by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, and was the first Catholic church built in Prussia since the Reformation. Destroyed in 1943 during Allied bombing, it was rebuilt between 1952 and 1963 in a modernist style. Closed for renovation in 2018, it reopened on 24 November 2024 with a contemporary interior design featuring a hemispherical altar made of small stones collected by parishioners from across the diocese. Its crypt holds the remains of bishops such as Konrad von Preysing, Alfred Bengsch and Bernhard Lichtenberg, who was imprisoned by the Nazis after publicly praying for the Jews during Kristallnacht. The cathedral houses three historic tapestries depicting the theme of the Heavenly Jerusalem, a Klais organ, and offers public guided tours, organ concerts and other musical events. It is an active place of worship and a historic monument of great significance in central Berlin.
