One of the oldest natural history museums in the world, founded in 1771 by Charles III, it occupies the Palacio de las Artes y la Industria, next to Paseo de la Castellana. Its exhibitions display minerals, fossils, dinosaurs and the planet's biodiversity, and it holds the skeleton of the Megatherium americanum, brought from Argentina in the 18th century, the first specimen of its kind ever mounted.
