Basilica of Llano del Olivar
In the Murcian district of Algezares, at the foot of the Cresta del Gallo, the open-air remains of a late Roman-Visigothic basilica are preserved. Visitors can make out three aisles separated by columns, a semicircular apse and a possible portico. Beside the left side lies the baptistery, with an almost octagonal baptismal pool fitted with stone steps on each side. In the surroundings, lattices, slabs with geometric decoration, decorated chancel screens, decorative pine cones, voussoirs and bricks reused from a thermal hypocaust have been documented. There are also signs of a porticoed building that may have been an episcopal palace and of a necropolis. The site was first excavated in 1934 and is dated to the 6th century, in the heart of the late Roman-Visigothic period, although some authors link it to the legendary episcopal city of Eio. The baptismal pit, preserved on site, lets you imagine the immersion rite that was practised in ancient times.
