Museo de Burgos (Casa de Miranda)
The Museo de Burgos occupies the Casa de Miranda, a Renaissance palace built around 1545 and attributed, with some probability, to the architect Juan de Vallejo. Together with the neighbouring Casa de Íñigo Angulo it forms a block between Calle Calera and Calle Miranda. The most recognisable feature of the building is its central courtyard, with two storeys of galleries on columns, with richly carved capitals and corbels, which also organises the route inside. On its upper floors the Prehistory and Archaeology section is displayed, running from the Palaeolithic to the Visigothic period in eight rooms: replicas of the Atapuerca hominids, grave goods from the Bronze and Iron Ages and Roman pieces from Clunia, among them the statue of Isis. The Fine Arts section brings together the Romanesque enamelled frontal from Santo Domingo de Silos, the tomb of Juan de Padilla carved by Gil de Siloé, paintings of the 15th and 16th centuries, Baroque works and creations of the 19th and 20th centuries.
