She Shan Basilica
She Shan Basilica stands at the top of a wooded hill in Songjiang district, west of Shanghai. It is a Catholic church in basilica style with a Latin-cross plan, three naves and room for 3,000 worshippers. Its exterior is mainly granite, with part of the roof covered in coloured glazed tiles in the Chinese style. Inside, the high altar is built of marble with gold and jade ornaments, presided over by an image of Mary Help of Christians with Chinese facial features. The 38-metre bell tower supports a 4.8-metre bronze statue of the Virgin and Child. Visitors can walk the Way of the Cross that climbs the slope, with its fourteen stations, and visit the historic outbuildings. At the summit, next to the basilica, stands the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, built by the Jesuits in the early 20th century. The basilica is an active pilgrimage centre, especially in May, when thousands of worshippers from all over China come to pray the rosary and attend Mass.
