Puerto de La Cadena

Puerto de La Cadena is a mountain pass between the Carrascoy and Cresta del Gallo ranges, in the municipality of Murcia. It forms part of the protected natural area of Carrascoy y El Valle and offers scenic value. Nearby are preserved ruins of medieval fortifications such as Asomada Castle and the Portazgo Superior, which controlled the pass and served as a toll checkpoint. Its name comes from the chain that closed off the road until the toll was paid. In the ravine, stretches of the Roman Via Augusta road survive. Fossils of prehistoric animals such as mastodons, giraffes, rhinoceroses and hippopotamuses have been found nearby, along with shells of giant Miocene tortoises more than 2 metres long. From the top, the Campo de Cartagena, the Mar Menor and the lowlands of the Segura and Guadalentín can be seen.
