The Museum of Decorative Arts Berlin (Kunstgewerbemuseum) is a decorative arts museum of international importance, part of the Berlin State Museums. Its collection is spread across two sites: the Kulturforum building, designed by Rolf Gutbrod and opened in 1985, and the Baroque Köpenick Palace. It brings together European and Byzantine decorative arts from every post-classical period, with pieces in gold, silver, glass and enamel, porcelain, furniture, panelling, tapestries, costumes and silks. A particularly important collection of Late Antique objects in various materials stands out, along with numerous medieval gold reliquaries, including the reliquary arm of St Caesarius. Renaissance highlights include Lüneburg silverware, bronze sculptures, tapestries, furniture, Venetian glass and maiolica from the princely courts of Italy. The Baroque period is represented by Delftware and glass objects, and there is European porcelain, notably from Meissen and the Royal Porcelain Factory of Berlin, as well as decorative tableware in the Rococo, Classicist, Historicist and Art Nouveau styles. The 'New Collection' of 20th-century craft includes industrially manufactured products. Founded in 1868 as the Deutsches Gewerbe-Museum zu Berlin, it was renamed Kunstgewerbemuseum in 1879 and has occupied several sites before reaching its current form.
