New National Gallery Berlin

The New National Gallery Berlin is a museum of modern art designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, opened in 1968 and renovated by David Chipperfield between 2015 and 2021. The building, an icon of modernism, consists of a glazed pavilion raised on steel pillars and an underground floor housing the permanent collection. The collection focuses on 20th-century art, with particular attention to Expressionism, Cubism, the Bauhaus and Surrealism, and includes works by Picasso, Klee, Munch, Kandinsky, Miró and Newman, among others. The museum also has a sculpture garden with permanent works by artists such as Eduardo Chillida, Henry Moore, Alexander Calder and Richard Serra. The terrace offers a prominent space for large-scale sculptures. The building itself is a masterpiece of modern architecture, with a square metal roof supported by eight perimeter pillars and a glass enclosure creating an open, light-filled space. The visit takes in the upper pavilion, the underground galleries and the sculpture garden, and offers views over the Tiergarten.
