Zen temple founded in 1236 by the regent Kujō Michiie, one of the great Rinzai temples of Kyoto. It preserves the Sanmon gate, the oldest main Zen gate in Japan. It is famous for the maples of the Sengyokukan valley, which is crossed by the covered Tsūten-kyō bridge, and for the Hōjō gardens, designed in 1939 by Shigemori Mirei, with rocks and moss in geometric compositions.
