Buddhist temple founded in 778 on the slope of Mount Otowa, in eastern Kyoto. Its main hall has a large wooden terrace that juts out over the slope, supported by a structure of interlocking pillars without nails, with views over the city and the trees on the hillside. At the foot of the hall rises the Otowa waterfall, whose water visitors drink. It is a World Heritage Site and is reached by climbing the Higashiyama streets, full of shops.
