The cathedral of Rome and seat of the pope as bishop of the city, founded in the 4th century under Constantine. It is regarded as the mother church of all Catholic churches. The façade, from the 18th century, is by Alessandro Galilei and is crowned by large statues. Inside, the highlights are the statues of the apostles in the nave, the Gothic baldachin and the Cosmatesque cloister. It stands in Piazza di San Giovanni.
