Monumental sculpture carved directly into the limestone of the Giza plateau: a recumbent lion with a human head, about 73 m long and 20 m high. It is commonly attributed to the reign of Khafre, of the 4th dynasty (around 2500 BC). It stands beside Khafre's Valley Temple and faces east, towards the rising sun. Its nose disappeared centuries ago.
