River island on the Nile in the south of the city, famous for the Nilometer, built in 861-862 during the Abbasid caliphate of al-Mutawakkil to measure the river's flood and calculate agricultural taxes. It consists of a stone well with a graduated central column. On the same island is also the Manial Palace, of Prince Mohamed Ali Tawfik.
