Remains of the Roman fortress of Babylon, built in the time of Trajan and strengthened later, the origin of the settlement that would become Old Cairo. Next to the Mar Girgis metro station, two circular towers of the western gate survive; the church of Mar Girgis was built on top of one of them. Several Coptic churches in the quarter stand on its walls.
