Expiatory Church of the Sacred Heart
The basilica crowns the summit of Tibidabo, next to the Vallvidrera to Tibidabo road. The architect Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia designed the Neo-Gothic church, which his son Josep Maria completed; it was built between 1902 and 1961. It consists of a Neo-Byzantine crypt, dug into the mountain, and an upper church on a square plan with three aisles and a central dome supported by eight columns. The central tower is crowned by a 7.5-metre bronze statue of the Sacred Heart, made by Josep Miret in 1950, which is lit up at night. In the crypt a crucifix by Joan Puigdollers above the high altar stands out. A lift, for a fee, goes up to the terraces, from where Barcelona and its surroundings can be seen. It should not be confused with the amusement park, which is a few steps away and is a separate site.
