Tokyo Sea Life Park
Tokyo Sea Life Park is a large public aquarium in Kasai Rinkai Park, Tokyo. It houses around 650 species in 47 tanks, including a 2,200 m³ ring-shaped tank that was Japan's largest indoor tank when it opened in 1989 and which holds Pacific bluefin tuna, hammerhead sharks and other pelagic species. The route includes ocean exhibits divided by marine region (South China Sea, Great Barrier Reef, Caribbean, Mediterranean, North Sea, deep sea, Arctic and Antarctic), a penguin area with four species, a giant kelp forest, a section devoted to the seas around Tokyo (the Ogasawara and Izu islands and Tokyo Bay), seabirds, and a touch pool with starfish and sea urchins. The aquarium also carries out research and conservation work, and was the first in Japan to keep bluefin tuna and hammerhead sharks in long-term captivity, as well as the first to achieve captive breeding of the ocellated icefish, in 2013.
