Great necropolis of ancient Memphis, about 25 km south of Cairo. It holds the step pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser, of the 3rd Dynasty, the work of the architect Imhotep and regarded as one of the first great stone monuments of Egypt. The site also includes other pyramids and numerous tombs of officials with painted reliefs.
