Piasa Bird
High on the cliffs overlooking the Mississippi River, next to the Great River Road in Alton, is a large painting of the Piasa Bird, a winged creature with antlers, red eyes, a human face and a scaly body. The current image was repainted in the 1990s on the same bluff where it now watches over the river. The spot, known as Piasa Park, lets you take in the painting and the views of the Mississippi. The legend of the Piasa, a man-eating being, was recorded by the explorer Jacques Marquette in 1673 and has evolved over centuries into a symbol of Alton and the region.
