Alton National Cemetery
Alton National Cemetery occupies a half-hectare plot within Alton's municipal cemetery, in Illinois. It has operated since 1870 as a military section and was ceded to the federal government in 1940; local residents opposed moving the remains to Springfield, so they remain here. Many Union soldiers of the Civil War rest on the site, and at the end of 2005 it held 522 burials. Since 2006 an annual Memorial Day ceremony has been held at sunset, with speeches by local elected officials, a performance by the Scott Air Force Base Pipes and Drums band and a 21-gun salute by the VFW. Access to new burials is limited to cremated remains and, since 2018, to second interments.
