This historic cemetery in Alton preserves the former burial ground of the Civil War Confederate prison. The central feature is a 58-foot granite obelisk erected in 1909 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which marks the soldiers' mass graves and bears six bronze plaques with the names of 1,354 Confederates who died in the prison or on Tow Head Island. The site is open to the public every day, from dawn to dusk, and can be explored at leisure; it is maintained by Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
