Piasa
The Piasa is a legendary creature originally depicted in a rock mural painted by Native Americans on the limestone cliffs above the Mississippi River, in what is now Alton, Illinois. The original mural, described by the French explorers Marquette and Jolliet in 1673, was the largest Native American rock painting found in North America. Although the original was destroyed in the 19th century, replicas have been installed during the 20th century on the Alton cliff, several hundred yards upriver from its original location. The creature, identified as a water panther or a winged being, is part of native mythology and has been the subject of legends and folklore studies. Visitors can see the current replica on the cliff and learn about the history and legends associated with it.
