Elijah P. Lovejoy Monument
On top of a cliff above the Mississippi River stands this memorial to Elijah P. Lovejoy, an abolitionist editor murdered in Alton in 1837. The monument reaches 93 feet in height and is topped by a winged statue of victory 17 feet tall; two side pinnacles with eagles and bronze lions flank the central axis. At the base, a stone bench in the form of a wall lets you experience the whispering wall phenomenon: one person can hear another standing out of sight on the opposite side. The four faces of the pedestal are engraved with quotations from Lovejoy on freedom of speech and his opposition to slavery. From the site there is a commanding view of the river, and the monument can be seen from a great distance, even when crossing the bridge from Missouri.
